We recently held a breakfast briefing to explore smarter ways to execute investment strategies post MiFID II. Our panel of experts discussed the changing nature of European market structure since MiFID II and the challenges smaller asset managers face in looking for smarter ways to execute their investment strategies. Technology and innovation in the pursuit of alpha have played a central part in our discussions.
Kevin Russell is Proposition Director for the SEI Wealth Platform in the UK. Kevin is responsible for leading the proposition development of the Wealth Platform in the UK and overseeing marketing and client solutions. He is also the author of SEI’s Wealth Management blog, Wealth Talks and is a regular commentator on the challenges facing wealth managers including transformation in wealth management firms and the role of technology and digital as a change agent in wealth management.
Kevin has over 30 years of wealth management experience. Following a 26-year career at Standard Life, where his last role was Head of Platform and E-business Development, he has spent the last five years working in a number of consultancy and advisory roles.
James Baugh is European Head of Market Structure for Citi’s equity business, responsible for developing its liquidity strategy. Previously, he spent more than 11 years at London Stock Exchange, where as head of equity sales he was directly responsible for initiatives like Turquoise Plato Block Discovery™. Other roles included Head of Client management for Baikal, the dark book initiative initially developed in partnership with Lehman Brothers and was made Director of Client Management at Turquoise when LSE acquired the business in 2010.
Alasdair Haynes is the founder and CEO of Aquis Exchange, the pan-European equities trading platform, which has introduced subscription pricing and innovative order types into the marketplace. In addition to operating an FCA-regulated MTF, Aquis develops technology for third parties. Aquis Exchange is listed on the London Stock Exchange’s AIM.
Alasdair is the former CEO of Chi-X Europe and was responsible for growing the business into Europe's largest equities trading platform and into profitability before its sale in late 2011. Prior to that, Alasdair spent 11 years heading up ITG's international business, pioneering the introduction of electronic trading and crossing into the European and Asian marketplaces. Alasdair began his 30 plus-year career in the City with Morgan Grenfell and has held senior positions at a number of investment banks including HSBC and UBS.
Keith Phillips is Executive Director of The Investment Association, with Executive responsibility for enterprise, innovation and market development covering all aspects of the investment / asset management sector.
He is a Member of the Board of the IAs FinTech Innovation Hub and Accelerator, Velocity, and the threat intelligence and financial crime information sharing platform TITAN.
Prior to joining The Investment Association in 2016, Keith was Executive Executive Director for Membership and Business Development of the British Banker’s Association. He was responsible for all BBA-wide enterprise activities, commercial development and member engagement including the related financial and professional service sectors.
Keith served as Commercial Director at TheCityUK for 3 years where he was Executive Director; Commercial and International Strategy managing all business development, member engagement and strategic marketing communications and principal lead with the FCO on all interactions with international financial centres.
Previous roles have included a role as Member of the Prudential UK & Europe Distribution Executive with management oversight of the Key Account, Banking and Large Deal Business Development teams, Europe-wide, and Head of Customer and Advice Propositions at Barclays Wealth and Investment Management
Daniel Shepherd is the CEO and Co-founder of Bton Financial. He has enjoyed 20+ years success in finance with a career spent in London, Tokyo and Hong Kong. He was focused on the field of prime brokerage for Societe Generale for over 10 years and helped build and sell a low latency trading FinTech company - Algospan. Most recently, Dan was head of sales and marketing for the London Stock Exchange’s TRADEcho MiFID II solution.
Nick Millington is Co-head Quantitative Equities, Aberdeen Standard Investments, where he has worked for the past 5 years. Prior joining Aberdeen, Nick was Co Head Quantitative Equity at Scottish Widows Investment Partnership having started his industry career as a graduate at JP Morgan.
